House in Balmain

Residential alterations and additions

The project is to find an appropriate form for an addition to a corner shop that had been converted into a dwelling. The shop windows were sheltered by a low awning roof extending over the footpath at the corner, a characteristic feature of the streets of Balmain.
The proposal transforms the ground floor with new openings to improve light and air to the reconfigured living spaces now open to the courtyard, a new kitchen and bathroom. Two new bedrooms are provided upstairs in a timber clad addition sympathetic to, and set back from, the form of the low roof at the corner.
A roof deck is placed in the gap between the new and the old, opening the house to local views.
Under construction.
